The International Development Association of the World Bank (IDA) has approved $200 million in financing for a project to enhance the safety, sustainability, and efficiency of the railway line in Tanzania between Dar es Salaam and Isaka.

The project, which is the second phase of the Tanzania Intermodal Rail Development Plan (TIRP), will include the reconstruction or rehabilitation of about 470 km of railway tracks on the line and the installation of climate resilience measures such as flood control systems.
IDA financing will primarily focus on strengthening railway infrastructure and transportation studies on the line ($129 million).
Additionally, aspects of the project’s climate resilience will receive $55.3 million in funding, with the remaining $15.5 million going towards operational and institutional support.
